Considering a Medical Science Liaison (MSL) Certification? 5 Things You Should Look For

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is a specific role within a function called medical affairs. Medical affairs is the division within a pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, or diagnostic company that is focused on data generation and data dissemination to healthcare providers (HCPs). MSLs are focused on building relationships with key experts within the medical community and serve as ‘liaisons’ between HCPs and their company. MSLs have advanced scientific training and academic credentials generally consisting of a doctorate degree (Ph.D., PharmD., M.D.).

Here are the top 5 things to look for when choosing an MSL Board Certification:

1. Is it accredited?

Let’s face it, accreditation matters. It’s hard to overstate the importance of accreditation because although most organizations establish some sort of internal standards and rules for operations, having accreditation ensures that an organization meets regulations and standards set by a recognized, external organization. It’s like the difference between telling someone that you are smart, and showing them your degree from Harvard. Accreditation acts as an external stamp of approval for an MSL certification.

It shows that the organization offering the MSL board certification follows industry standards and best practices. When you can say that you have an MSL Board Certification from an accredited organization, it builds trust with patients and the medical community. Right now, the only accredited MSL Board Certification is from the Accreditation Council for Medical Affairs (ACMA).

2. Is it recognized?

It’s always an added bonus to have extra letters at the end of your name. For example, doctors who are fellows of a medical society for example, will almost always present that on their business cards and in their offices. It’s a sign that they have achieved a higher level of knowledge and specialization.

The same holds true for an MSL. When you add a professional designation to your title, it shows you have gone above and beyond. The key is determining whether or not that designation is recognized. Do industry professionals use it? How many have it? How long has it been around for? Currently there are two primary board certifications for MSLs. The MSL Society which offers the MSL-BC certification and the ACMA (mentioned above) which offers the Board Certified Medical Affairs Specialist (BCMAS) Board Certification. The MSL-BC was launched in March 2020 while the BCMAS was launched February 2015.

3. Can it be done online?

This is a big one. Flexibility is key. Can the exam be proctored online? Luckily, both the MSL-BC and the BCMAS certifications are both online. What type of supports are offered (eg., live chat, telephone, email, US/International, etc..)

4. How well prepared will you be for the exam?

Most MSLs are nerds at heart! They pride themselves on their ability to acquire knowledge but to also successfully communicate that information to their stakeholders. That being said, they especially hate failing tests! One of the things to consider is how much preparation you will get before taking the board certification exam. The ACMA offers 20 prep modules, case studies, and a practice question bank to help you pass on the first try (hopefully!).

With the MSL-BC certification, there is currently no preparatory materials. ACMA allows you up to 4x to take the exam with NO additional fee. With the MSL-BC you have to pay for each exam retake.

5. Will your company pay for it?

Most MSL managers and directors will support professional development for their MSLs. Ask your manager whether this can be part of your professional development plan. We’ve found that most companies will pay for it especially if it’s accredited.

So, there you have it! We hope this article was useful in helping you choose whether MSL board certification is right for you!
